Roman Empire Cvrsvs Pvblicvs fantasy stamp, sheet of 6
Price: $2.49
The Roman Empire came to an end long before postage stamps were invented, but what if the ancient Romans had had stamps for their courier system, the cvrsvs pvblicvs? This sheet of six stamps imagines what such an item might have looked like at a time when only those with permission from the emperor could use the mail.
Because the service could be used only with the emperor’s permission, these labels are inscribed “solvm officialis” except for a single stamp in every other sheet bearing “lorem ipsvm” placeholder text. One can only imagine that the emperor would have been greatly displeased with this error.
